If I have ever done your makeup, you will have noticed that I keep all of my pressed eyeshadows and blushes that are appropriate for your skin tone in a magnetic palette that looks something like this:

These empty palettes allow me to group products that work for each tone together for convenience, rather than having to open multiple compacts or pick out shadows from a palette that contains colors from multiple tones.

In this post, I want to provide you with the information you need to create a custom makeup palette for yourself (though it doesn't have to be as large as mine, of course – it's just for you).

I'm going to explain why I prefer them, how to choose (and where to purchase) your palette and the products to put in it, and how to put it all together to create your perfect palette.

Pre-made palette vs. palette that can be customized

The palettes that you are most likely already familiar with are pre-made. The colors in them have been chosen by the brand, and they are almost always in pans that have been glued into the palette, making it impossible to remove or replace them. What you see is exactly what you get.

Custom palettes are those that you create yourself by putting products in metal pans and putting them into a magnetic palette. The colors and arrangement are entirely up to you, and you are free to remove and replace them whenever you want.

Any pressed powder in a pan can be placed into your palette. So you could make an eyeshadow palette, a blush palette, or a combination of the two, and you could also get pans of bronzers, highlighters, powder foundations, setting powders, and other cosmetics.(You can also purchase cream products in pans, but combining powder and cream products in the same palette is a recipe for disaster.)

Having all of the powders you use in one palette not only allows you to make better use of your space, but it will also make it quicker and easier to complete your makeup routine.

The primary advantage of pre-made palettes is that they are less expensive, often significantly less expensive. However, this is only relevant if you intend to use all of the products contained within the palette.

When it comes to eyeshadow palettes, I've found that there are one or two colors that I use a lot and the rest that I use much less or not at all. Once those one or two are gone, the rest of the palette becomes useless to me because they are not replaceable. It is wasteful and does not provide good value for money.
